The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art is the only Museum in the nation that focuses on art by and about women of the African Diaspora. The Museum is seeking Student Assistants (2) to work closely with the Museum staff to provide assistance and support to the Museum’s operations and its three core priorities: exhibitions, programs, and the permanent collection.
Museum Students Assistants will:
- Have a basic understanding of museum staff positions and their respective responsibilities
- Develop a basic understanding of exhibition planning and the various phases of presenting an exhibition
- Have at least one opportunity to prepare and present a presentation (i.e. object lesson, public tour, exhibition overview) to the campus community and/or general public
RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Assistants will have the opportunity to work one-on-one and directly with the Museum team on a variety of projects that may include:
Operations:
- Assist with a variety of Museum projects and initiatives
- Assist with data entry, cataloguing the Museum’s media hits, maintaining files and archives, communications, etc.
- Assist with operating the Museum Shop
Permanent Collection and Exhibitions:
- Learn about the Spelman College Permanent Collection
- Work directly with the permanent collection (conduct research on and write about the permanent collection, use PastPerfect collections management software to document the permanent collection, monitoring the Museum facilities, etc.)
- Participate in exhibition planning and research
Education and Programs:
- Lead engagement with student groups and related demographics for current and upcoming programming projects
- Conduct research (online and by attending events alone and/or with the Curator of Education) for upcoming exhibition and programming opportunities
- Assist with the production and execution of public programs and other engagement activities
- Train docents and volunteers
- Graphic design
- Interact with Museum stakeholders via social media engagement

Qualifications:
Strong communication, organizational, extensive research, and writing skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Access, Word, Excel, Power Point); proficiency on multiple social media
platforms; the ability to work independently; attention to detail and a sense of responsibility for the projects undertaken. Must be able to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff,
volunteers, and the general public. Students with an interest in art history and visual culture are especially encouraged to apply.
