Beginning April 1, 2017, applications will be accepted for the Spelman College Curatorial Studies Program, a collaboration between the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and the Department of Art & Art History. People of color have been underrepresented in curatorial positions in the museum field. By increasing the diversity among curators, museums will generate new and innovative engagement with art and ultimately serve diverse audiences better. The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and the Department of Art & Art History, which are committed to preparing the next generation of arts leaders, have joined forces to offer this unique program. The Spelman College Curatorial Studies Program is made possible by generous support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Curatorial Studies Program are to:
- provide training in art history and curatorial practice
- encourage pre-professional access to museums across the country
- facilitate mentorship opportunities with innovative curators in the field
PROGRAM DETAILS
The program requires a two-year commitment and will be limited to 12 participants. While students will continue to work closely with their principal academic advisors, members of the Spelman College Curatorial Studies Advisory Committee will serve as project advisors.
Over the course of two years, students will:
- Complete two (2) curatorial studies courses.
- Participate in paid internships for two consecutive summers at partnering museums that are located throughout the country.
- Participate in sessions, workshops, and experiences guided by noteworthy curators who will also serve as program mentors.
- Travel as a group to participate in special program-specific trips during Spring and Fall Breaks. These topical seminars and other discussions will be led by partnering institutions and program mentors. Students will be selected to participate in these trips through a competitive process.
OUTCOMES
At the end of the two-year experience students will be able to:
- have an informed, pre-professional, and working definition of their curatorial practice
- write, prepare, and present curatorial projects to a variety of audiences
ELIGIBILITY
Rising sophomores and juniors, regardless of their major, who are enrolled at Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse College, are eligible. Students must have successfully completed Understanding Visual Art, Art History I, or Introduction to Art History by May 2017. The selection process is competitive and participants with strong writing, research, and critical thinking skills are encouraged to apply. The program is limited to 12 students.
