Spelman College Summer Art Colony

PROGRAMS

The Spelman College Summer Art Colony is designed to provide students and emerging artists with a unique three-week cultural and creative enrichment experience with or without academic credit. For those Art Colony residents that are interested in an experience free from academic and/or professional pressure need not apply for academic credit.

Spelman College Students ONLY:
Spelman students wishing to earn academic credit must register for one of the following courses:
* Art 160. Special Problems - Painting I
* Art 260. Special Problems - Painting II
* Art 360. Special Problems - Painting III

Non-Spelman students:
Non-Spelman students wishing to receive academic credit from their home institution should discuss registering for an Independent Study course with a professor at their home institutions.


All Art Colony Residents will be provided with:

I. Instruction in the visual arts

1. Environmental Art:
a. Sustainable architectural structures
b. Biodegradable sculptures
c. Indoor installations
d. Outdoor installations
e. Earthworks


2. Painting:
a. Tropical landscape painting
b. Still life - tropical fruits and flowers
c. Portraiture
d. Spanish colonial architecture
e. Caribbean architecture
f. Congo art
g. Independent study

Note: All Art Colony Residents will be provided an opportunity to participate in a culminating art exhibition of their work during their residency. This exhibition will take place at one or all of the following venues - La Casa Rodriquez, an 18th century Spanish colonial house; the Aduana, a restored 17th century customs house; and Las Orquídeas Sculpture Park, a 13 acre plot of land in the rainforest on the Bay of Portobelo.


II. Supervised Projects

1. Supervision of community service projects
2. Supervision of ethnographic and/or historic research projects

Daily Schedule
8:00am - 9:00am - Breakfast.
9:00am - 1:00pm - Work on assigned projects
1:00pm - 2:00pm - Lunch
2:00pm - 5:00pm - Work on assigned projects
5:00pm - 6:00pm - Down time
6:00pm - 7:00pm - Supper
7:00pm - Down time

Art Colony Residents will participate in daily review of their work and weekly critiques with their cohorts led by Professor Lindsay.


Extra-Curricular Activities

Weekends are reserved for cultural enrichment activities and field trips.
