SPELMAN RECEIVES $1.4 MILLION GRANT TO MENTOR AND DEVELOP FEMALE SCIENTISTS
ATLANTA (April 24, 2008) Spelman College has received a $1.4 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to identify creative new ways to engage students in the biological sciences. Spelman will use the grant to help more Black women develop and maintain an interest in science through a documentary film project, a revamped mentoring program and new science classes.

STUDENT ART INSTALLATION EMPOWERS CHILDREN TO MAKE POSITIVE CHOICES
ATLANTA (April 20, 2008) The Spelman College Art as a Social Action class, in conjunction with The Study Hall, an afterschool program in the Peoplestown community of Atlanta, present “Power Play: Choosing Empowerment on the Playground.” This 4-by-5-foot interactive outdoor installation uses four diptych panel paintings of life-sized children to promote self-esteem and self-empowerment among second-grade scholars in the program.

SPELMAN STUDENTS USE SPRING BREAK TO HELP CHANGE THE WORLD
ATLANTA (April 10, 2008) While many students were relaxing on the beach during spring break, a group of Spelman College students took a life-changing trip to the Republic of Senegal to help build a school library in support of the 10,000 Girls organization. Black Entertainment Television chronicled the nine-day humanitarian mission for “Spring Break Diaries,” a half-hour special which premieres on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. EST on BET.

ATLANTA (April 7, 2008) Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. presented two Spelman College students with $2,500 scholarships as part of the Cracker Barrel Endowed Heritage Scholars program at Spelman College. Senior-year students Tanganica Turner and Eddiemae Nash will use the scholarship funding to help pay tuition for their final semesters at Spelman College.

ATLANTA (January 11, 2008) The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston collaborate to present the groundbreaking exhibition, “Cinema Remixed and Reloaded: Black Women Artists and the Moving Image Since 1970.” Opening Thursday, January 24, 2008, Part II of “Cinema Remixed and Reloaded” will feature projections, installations, interactive CD-ROM projects, experimental film and video work by more than 40 artists, and is the first exhibition to examine the critical contributions that black women continue to make to the field of video art.
